We will have our second free open mat of the season this Thursday (7-19) from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at the Team Irish Performance Training Center. About 15 wrestlers attended last week’s session representing a good range of ages, weights and experience levels. We hope to see you there this week. These sessions will run each Thursday for the next few weeks.
J Robinson, head coach at the University of Minnesota, talks about what impact wrestling has on your life, how it changes you and makes you better than you were before. It’s good to know the values we are trying to teach at the youth level are taught by some of the best coaches in the country. This is worth a few minutes of your time.

Interesting article by David Crisanti about wrestling. It’s worth a quick read. Here’s an excerpt and the link:
But although the outcome is seldom in doubt, wrestlers do love to watch wrestling. Where else in life can you see a test that simply gauges the better man, all randomness due to wind, rain, the bounce of a ball, performance of teammates or the subjectivity of judges taken out of the equation?
Despite my background as an athlete I was not a big believer that sports build character. I was more on the side that sports revealed it. But with the benefit of time and experience, it is clear to me that this sport builds humility. It does so by dint of its lack of chance.

Last night nearly 30 wrestlers made the trip to York for a dual meet against Hammerhead Wrestling Systems. Our experienced wrestlers showed off their typical tough style and sportsmanship but it was the new wrestlers that really stole the show. They brought a never quit attitude with the skills they’ve been learning on the practice mat and found a lot of success in what was, for most of them, their first competition of the season. Congratulations to all who participated.
Thank you Hammerhead wrestlers for your sportsmanship, hard wrestling and for hosting a first-class event!
Win the battle for positioning. Win that scramble, win the whistle. Win the details, and the rest will take care of itself.
We just found out that we have to change Friday practice this week. PHS needs the gym for something else so we’ll practice Thursday at 6:15 instead.
